A local leisure centre in Sunbury has been recognised for its commitment to providing inclusive facilities.
Sunbury Leisure Centre, managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Spelthorne Borough Council, undertook an Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) assessment at the end of last year. The centre has now been awarded with a certificate with the accreditation of ‘very good’.
The accolade recognises the centre’s commitment to providing welcoming and accessible services for disabled people and people with long term health conditions. The IFI accreditation will be in place for the next two years.
Karl Miles, Area Contract Manager at Everyone Active, commented: “It is an honour to be awarded for our commitment to providing inclusive facilities for everyone to enjoy. We are passionate about engaging people from all backgrounds in exercise and are proud to have received recognition for this.
“This award not only reflects the diversity of our facilities, but also the hard work and support that our staff provide to all of our members.”
Councillor Joanne Sexton, Portfolio Holder for Corporate Management at Spelthorne Borough Council said: “I am delighted that Sunbury Leisure Centre has gained this seal of approval for their accessible fitness services. I hope that this encourages more disabled people and those with long term health conditions to access the centre and benefit from the facilities.
“As a Council we want to provide opportunities for all our residents to be physically active and having local facilities with this kind of inclusive accreditation helps us do that. Well done to everyone involved.”
The Inclusive Fitness Initiative has been established for many years, supporting leisure centres to become more welcoming and accessible environments to disabled people.
